Search and Identify Area Deciduous Trees
Objective: To have students become aware of the work involved for a botanist in collecting, organizing, and identifying trees.
Procedure: 1. Find and pick the various types of leaves from the list of trees in the Parkston area. (Be careful not to pick off leaflets of a leaf)
2. Press and dry leaves. (use an old Sears or JCPenney's catalog) 3. Display pressed leaves on identification sheets given to you by the instructor. (The leaves are not brown or have holes in them) 4. Identify the trees by their leaves: a. Common name b. Scientific name (Remember that scientific names must be underlined) c. Where picked- this is where you practice your map skills. d. Ask the instructor to see examples of previous portfolios and how to map locations. |
